This painting was commissioned by the Leonard J. Waxdeck's 25th Annual Bird Calling Contest that was held at the Piedmont High School Theater on May 26, 1988. The following evening the winners were featured on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. This image appeared during the interim time slots in the show. This painting was also used in an advertisement for Aerosmith albums.
Mark Fredrickson has worked as an illustrator and fine artist for over 36 years. His paintings and digital art have appeared numerous times on the covers and inside of Time Magazine, Business Week, Industry Week, Sports Illustrated, Golf Digest, The Village Voice, Mad Magazine and many others too numerous to mention. He has garnered many national awards for his work including a gold and silver medal from the Society of Illustrators. Mark's cover art for the September 2008 Issue of Mad Magazine is included in Time's top 10 magazine covers of 2008. Thanks Stephen. This was done with airbrush and a fine scratching technique with layer upon layer of transparent color in between the fine scratching with an X-acto knife. I will never do this again since I've gone digital. It was too painstaking. Thanks for appreciating the work. Your photography is beautiful.
